By 1930, a local magazine noted that as many as thirty-five “pansy parlors” had opened in just six months in Towertown, the neighborhood adjacent to the old Chicago Water Tower (Heap 2009, p. 88). The emergence of Chicago’s gay subculture was closely tied to an explosion of popular culture in the city’s growing racial and ethnic communities and the fashionable slumming on the part of adventurous white middle- and upper-class bohemians that accompanied both phenomena.
